5 LANDSCAPING TIPS FOR THE SUMMER

Xtra Mile Team | May 23rd, 2023

Summer is here…

and our yards are ready for a refresh! It's the perfect time to create a haven for relaxation and enjoyment after a long Minnesota winter. We're eager to spend as much time as possible outdoors.

We all have that one neighbor with the picture-perfect yard: mowing lines on the greenest grass, vibrant blooming flowers, and impeccable landscaping. Perhaps this year, it could be you! We all desire a beautiful yard but may lack the time to maintain it. Therefore, we've compiled five easy tips you can use this summer to keep your yard looking fantastic.

Choose drought-tolerant plants

During the summer months, it can be challenging to keep your plants properly watered. Consider incorporating drought-tolerant plants into your landscaping to reduce water usage and create a more sustainable garden. Examples of drought-tolerant plants include succulents, lavender, and yarrow. Since we often spend more time traveling, camping, or at the cabin rather than at home, it's essential to ensure that your plants can go without watering for a few days, preventing a withered and unsightly garden.

Create shade

If you plan to spend time outdoors during the summer, it's important to have adequate shade for staying cool. Consider planting trees or installing a pergola.

Additionally, you can utilize shade-loving plants to create a natural canopy. Trees and pergolas not only serve a practical purpose but also add value to your home. They can increase its resale value and enhance its curb appeal.

Along with pergolas, now might be the perfect time to invest in a 3 season porch. We have a few ongoing projects of 3 season porches that are looking great— we’re excited to share the finished product with you. In the meantime, check out these awesome 3D renderings from one of our designers we partner with, Melissa Mathieu.

A 3 season porch is a fantastic option as it keeps out bugs and rain, allowing for its use (almost) year-round! As depicted in the rendering, it's a perfect spot for game nights, movie nights, or simply relaxing on a summer evening. We take pleasure in designing spaces where our clients and their families can create lasting memories.

Use mulch

Mulching your garden beds can help retain moisture in the soil, which is crucial during the hot summer months. Additionally, mulch aids in weed suppression and improves soil fertility. It acts as a barrier, preventing weed seeds from germinating and competing with your plants for nutrients and water. By using mulch, you can save time and effort by avoiding the need to constantly pull weeds.

Furthermore, mulch enhances the visual appeal of your garden or landscape, providing a neat and uniform appearance. It can be utilized to create defined pathways, highlight specific plantings, or complement the overall design of the area. Remember to select the appropriate type of mulch based on your specific needs and the requirements of your plants.

Include a water feature

Water features such as fountains or ponds can serve as attractive focal points in your garden, offering both visual appeal and a source of coolness and relaxation during the summer. Moreover, the sound of running water can help drown out street noise, creating a more serene atmosphere.

Well-designed and well-maintained water features have the potential to increase the value of your property. They are often sought-after additions that can make your home stand out and attract potential buyers. Water features also have the ability to draw various forms of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and frogs. These creatures add vibrancy and liveliness to your yard, making it a delightful space to observe and appreciate nature up close.

Keep up with maintenance

It may seem simple, but it's a game-changer! During the summer, your garden and landscape can quickly become overgrown and untidy. Stay on top of maintenance tasks such as pruning, deadheading, and weeding to keep your garden looking its best. Regular maintenance will also help keep pests and diseases at bay, as they can be more prevalent during the summer months.

We hope these tips point you in the right direction to keeping your yard looking great all summer long. We want you to love your space and create a welcoming environment for your guests.

Now is also an excellent time to consider a remodel, whether it's for the interior or exterior of your home. We have you covered! Just give us a call to schedule a free consultation.
