So you are thinking of remodeling your bathroom?

Here are 3 way to prepare before you start a bathroom remodel.

So you are thinking of remodeling your bathroom? Where do you start? Bathroom remodels don’t have to be a daunting experience. Designing and preparing for your own bathroom remodel can be enjoyable. Here are three tips to help you prepare before a bathroom remodel.

Tip 1: Create a physical mood board.

What are some of your favorite items? Think of items already in your home. Is it a blanket made with unique weaving? Is it your favorite handmade mug? Is it an aged brass handle? A photograph or art work in your home? Do you have flowers in the garden?  Another great resource is going to your local hardware store and grabbing color samples. Stop and peruse the rainbow walls of seemingly endless colors. Note what calls your attention. How do you feel when looking at certain colors? You get the idea. A physical mood board does not have to follow rules. Grab things that bring you joy. Mix them around. Mix and match until the final product is something that makes your heart smile. Take a photo of this and share it with your contractor as inspiration for your bathroom remodel. Or if you are handy and will do the remodel yourself, this will give you direction and inspiration to get started!

Here is a photograph of a physical mood board we made by gathering items we had around our office. This little board is serving as inspiration for a small bathroom on a lake side cabin here in Minnesota.

Tip 2: Create a digital mood board.

We created these two moodboards on Design files: https://designfiles.co

Here is a great resource to create a digital mood board. Design files will allow you to pull resources from different websites. Including plumbing fixtures, vanities, lighting, mirrors, tile and more.  Creating a digital mood board can be so fun! The bonus part is you can add the actual items and selections you would like to see in your bathroom. Bonus points if you keep track of the different vendors. Play with the mood board, make multiple even! When you finally create one or a couple that make you smile, save them and give them to your contractor. This will give them a great starting point when helping you finalize the bathroom design. If you are handy with tools and love to create, this might be another tool to add to that tool belt!

Here are two simple ways you could use design files to compile you selections and even look at tile side by side. We used a board to gather all the plumbing and lighting fixtures for a bathroom remodel. We also created a board to see tile options side by side. This tool also helps you create 3D designs! Enjoy!

Tip 3: Create a Pinterest board.

This might be simplest way to narrow down a couple different ideas for your bathroom inspiration. Slow down for a minute. Close your eyes and think of the feeling you would like to have when entering your remodeled bathroom? Do you want it to feel moody and sophisticated? Do you want to feel like you’ve stepped in to a spa? If so, search spa bathrooms and you’ll find hundreds of pins and boards of people who have already compiled ideas for you. Save their boards and share them with your contractor. Again, if you are the handyman or handy lady, Pinterest is gold. This will be an incredible reference point when finalizing your bathroom design!
