New Year’s Resolution: Remodel Your Home

As the end of the year comes to a close, perhaps you find yourself surrounded by loved ones celebrating the holiday season, reflecting back on 2024, and dreaming about the new year to come. Although you may think about your new year’s resolutions at the beginning of the year, we’d encourage you to make a plan for them, especially if your list includes remodeling your home.

From home remodelers who have worked with hundreds of families on remodels of all sizes, we understand how important the planning is before we even start tearing down walls. The following questions will help you prepare and think through a remodel so you can feel confident with your decisions and the overall vision.

WHY do you want to remodel your home?
You probably already know the answer to this question, but casting your vision for your home remodel is the best place to begin. What isn’t working in your home currently, or what do you want to function better for your family? Perhaps you’re running out of space, you have too much space, or you want your space to be more functional for you.

We recommend sitting down with the decision makers of your home to align on the “why” behind your remodel. That way, you can work out any of the discrepancies that maybe would have come later on. This is a great time to ask each other lots of questions and dive deep into the “why” behind your preferences. Plus, you will likely learn more about each other throughout the process!

WHERE do you want to remodel your home?

Along with thinking through the vision for your remodel, the next step is to think through which areas of your home would benefit from your remodel. Perhaps your entire home is in need of a remodel because the current layout or structure isn’t working anymore. Maybe you want to focus on one room of your home to start and then create phases for the additional rooms.

During this step, we’d also recommend asking if you will need additional space beyond the current footprint of your home. Oftentimes, our clients realize they would like an addition to increase the square footage of their home. This could be for an additional bathroom, an extension of your living space, or a mother-in-law suite for a family member who is moving in with you.

The final question to ask during this step is if you want to remodel the exterior, along with the interior, of your home. Could your siding, deck, or porch use an update that would enhance your life and how your family functions outside?

WHEN do you want to remodel your home?

Finally, after you have planned out your remodel and have talked through your vision and scope, it’s time to think about when to start the project. We’d love to talk with you about the estimated timeline and budget for your custom remodel to give you details to work with. Here in Minnesota, the weather can at times be a factor in your timeline, so it’s important to get all the details while still being flexible to complete your remodel correctly.
