A GUIDE FOR CABINET DOOR DESIGN

Who would have thought that the mundane detail of selecting the profile of your cabinet doors could be so important? When you are remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, the cabinets tend to be a major focal point or statement piece of the room.

Well, here is a short guide to help you make some choices, to get the look you are aiming for. Let's start with some of the cabinet basics.

Here are 3 main construction types for your cabinets: Face Frame or “Inset”, Partial Overlay and Full Overlay. As you can see, the Inset construction is where the doors are flush (on the same plane) as the frame of the cabinet box.

This is a little bit more of a traditional construction. Then we have the partial and full overlay construction, this is where the doors sit on top of/ in front of the cabinet box.

Let's move onto the different door profiles. There are a lot of different door profiles to choose from, to get the custom look you are going for. Here are just a few styles that are popular.

  1. Shaker doors are probably the most common door profile today. They are a good blend of traditional yet simple and clean looking. It’s a versatile design, because they put off a different feel depending on the finish/color you choose.

  2. Raised and Recessed panels offer a more traditional look, but I feel they have a more craftsman style. It has a traditional feel, but it can truly be a more artistic, beautiful aesthetic.

  3. Flat Panel doors definitely have a more modern appeal. There are a lot of ways to utilize the flush door look. Whether it’s with wood grain or paint, this style is clean and sleek.

  4. Beadboard panels have a “cottage” or “farmhouse” feel, as they add a decorative flair to the door panels, often used in kitchen island panels as well.

  5. Glass panel doors are very universal. It’s a beautiful way to bring some additional lighting to your kitchen, add some display areas, and help elevate your kitchen by having glass cabinets go to the ceiling.

I hope this was helpful in providing some inspiration for your future cabinet choices. Here at Xtra Mile Construction, our Design Team is here to help you!
